Art of Boxing

Johnny Gant, a world champion from long ago, runs Atlanta Art of Boxing in Midtown Atlanta. It's old school and reminiscent of the boxing gyms of Washington D.C. where Gant learned the art and discipline of boxing. Portraits and paintings of champions decorate the walls along with the constant reminder of sacrifice before redemption - no pain no gain.

Each day I passed this gym on my way home from school and it was curiosity that led me through its doors to use the camera to document an experience - the workout. It comes in many forms but to me, boxing represents more than just burning calories and toning muscle. It is a release of violence, confined to a small space and separate from all but the victor and his opponent.

I think I came here because I wanted to see what it felt like for a man to want to conquer the other. It seemed like a beautiful, yet horrific thing to want to do, so naturally I wanted to know why? I thought to look at this gym in search of a boxer's perspective.
